New Zealand’s WoF rules are changing from 1 November 2026, with a second stage following in November 2027. Many vehicles will be able to go longer between inspections, but the timing depends on their age and registration date.
It is important to note that your current WoF expiry date won’t change. You’ll still need to get your vehicle inspected when it’s due. The longer interval will apply at your next inspection once your vehicle is eligible.
What’s Changing?
- New light vehicles: From 1 November 2026, the second WoF will be due at four years instead of three.
- Light vehicles aged 4 to 14: WoFs will move from annual to two-yearly, in two stages:
- Registered on or after 1 November 2019: eligible from 1 November 2026.
- Registered between 1 November 2013 and 31 October 2019: eligible from 1 November 2027.
- Older light vehicles: Annual WoFs stay annual. Vehicles registered before 1 January 2000 will move from six-monthly to annual inspections from 1 November 2026.
- Motorcycles: Those registered before 1 January 2000 will move to annual WoFs from 1 November 2026. Newer motorcycles stay on annual inspections.
- Light rental vehicles: From 1 November 2026, CoF A inspections will move from six-monthly to annual.

Your current WoF or CoF A expiry date stays the same. The new interval applies at your next inspection once your vehicle is eligible.

Do You Need to Do Anything Now?
For now, keep following the expiry date on your current WoF label. The new rules won’t automatically extend it, even if your vehicle qualifies for less frequent inspections.
It’s also worth keeping the change in perspective. More time between WoFs doesn’t mean your vehicle needs less maintenance. Keep up with servicing and check things such as your tyres and lights between inspections.
If you’re unsure which category your vehicle falls into, check before assuming your next WoF will last longer.
